
Sanctuary
I confess to a growing obsession. A distant love affair if you like - a quiet observance and collection of tiny rooftop sanctuaries - havens of solitude and peace dotted about the uppermost terracotta canopies of the city and lovingly tended by residents. Creative patches of green nurtured in any and all space afforded. Sharing views with church bells, nesting birds and chimney stacks, they draw me in and speak of memories made and relationships forged over glasses of chianti


Over the rooftops
Our feathered friends have some very real advantages, not least flight and perspective. I welcomed a small insight into their world during a few glorious hours exploring the beauty, history, art, architecture and views of the Palazzo Vecchio. From its upper levels terracotta tiles covering every size, shape and angle of rooftop are evident as far as the eye can see. Such a warm, welcoming colour even on a grey day.
