Quiet moments with the Masters
One of the things I love about this city is that she generously affords all here the opportunity to slip quietly out of the bustle and noise of her busy streets, and into the peaceful haven of hidden spaces. Now, in the final period of intensive study at the FAA, days spent happily exploring the timeless city centre are few and far between. It has been a while since I have visited this part of the city, and it is a joy to rediscover the cloisters adjacent to the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata. Here resides the beautiful fresco of Madonna del Sacco (1525) by Andrea del Sarto - a personal favourite. A welcome walk in the peace, light and simplicity of the cloisters contrasts dramatically with the rich baroque decor and wax votive offerings found inside the church. Beautiful pieces of Renaissance art and sculpture surround an Italian couple exchanging marriage vows. The pews are filled with people watching them and gazing at the beauty around them. I join them and wonder at all this city has to offer in the everyday.
