Over the rooftops

Our feathered friends have some very real advantages, not least flight and perspective. I welcomed a small insight into their world during a few glorious hours exploring the beauty, history, art, architecture and views of the Palazzo Vecchio.

From its upper levels terracotta tiles covering every size, shape and angle of rooftop are evident as far as the eye can see. Such a warm, welcoming colour even on a grey day. Plenty of eaves to raise a feathered family - and a choice of lofty perches to soak in the timeless views. How many different birds across the centuries have rested here a while, savouring this vista before soaring onward over the cultural clammer of Florentine life?
